The Lunar Hatch project is exploring space-based fish farming, aiming to raise sea bass on the Moon and Mars to provide astronauts with vital protein, omega-3s, and B vitamins for muscle maintenance during long-term missions.
Ground tests have shown that sea bass eggs can endure the conditions of space travel, including rocket vibrations and cosmic radiation, with plans to send fertilized eggs to the ISS for further observation before eventually establishing lunar fish farms.
Using water from lunar polar ice, the project will employ a closed-loop system to recycle water in aquaculture tanks, aiming to produce enough fish for two servings per week for astronauts on 16-week missions.
